Under Construction

We finally did it. We finally stopped just talking endlessly about dramatically changing our house and pulled the trigger. Although we ran the idea of tearing down the Bay St. bungalow and building a new casa de Willis to the ground and even had architecture drawings made up, we concluded that now was not the time for anything that major. Instead, we decided to give the little bungalow a little face lift.

If you can remember back that far (and were lucky enough to be invited over) here is our lovely little abode back in the summer of 2006, about a year after we bought the place and moved in.  Over the past six years we changed very little about the way the house looked from the curb.

Until last Thursday when this happened. We lost our roof.

Well, technically we hired some folks to take it off for us and by the looks of it they did a great job! In fact, they knocked this out in just one day. If you look closely you can see that along with the roof, they removed the two small "dormers" that were on the roof. We found it a bit interesting, but not totally surprising, that the dormers were purely decorative. They didn't provide any venting to the attic at all. This turned out to be less work for the roofers (no holes to fill) so we didn't complain too much.

From this view you can also see the part of the project that I skipped over- the new brick columns that popped up on either side of the porch in place of the three white columns that were formerly across the front.

They tried to match the bricks to the house, and we think they got pretty close even though if you look really close you can tell the mortar is actually a bit darker than the original mortar used on the house.

Here is where most of our roof ended up, in a massive dumpster located in our drive way. Not the most attractive addition to the yard, but at least its a rather short walk if you need to throw something away.

So there is the house and the dumpster as well as the lumber that will be used to frame up our new gable roof that will go over the porch. Aside from the fact that we are the temporary eyesore of the neighborhood, we are pretty pumped to finally get this project underway.

Tis the season...and beyond

Believe it or not things around the Willis household have been low key by our standards lately, and we have enjoyed being home and spending time together.

Backing up just a little, we went on a camping trip for my birthday at the end of October. We were joined by friends which was extra special because there was more than one birthday in the group! Yay!

We slept in tents- that we set up in the dark. Thank goodness for  head lamps.

We had a fun Halloween. Andy and Brooks came to visit for a concert. We were the best looking folks there. As if there was any doubt.

Biggest Willis news is that David started a new job this month. He officially started working at Bank of America two weeks ago and seems to be adjusting well. The biggest benefit (that we know of right now and appreciate the most) is the commute- or should we say lack there of...

The holidays flew by- so fast in fact that I didn't have time to finish this post till it was almost February. But hopefully once I am caught up, there will be no more excuses and regular updates.

Can't pass up including the fun Christmas card we created to send to family that couldn't be with us. Sometimes it is the simplest pleasures that bring us joy. I am afraid I can't take credit for the idea- that goes to my lil bro, but I did use my killer editing skills to bring it all together.

January was filled with snow and cold and lots of girls basketball. I am really enjoying coaching a 14 and under team with "Papa Grande" (this is how the girls affectionately refer to dad- also known as the best assistant coach in the world).

They really are a fun group of girls to work and play with...

and sometimes they are even funny looking too!

I forgot how much I missed the game and having the pink jersey's is really just an extra bonus.
